Lisa Gasteen
Founder of the Lisa Gasteen National Opera Program
In 2011, Lisa Gasteen assumed the role of Practice Professor of Opera at The Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. Her appointment followed an illustrious career spanning over two decades, during which time she excelled in principal female lead roles in operas by Verdi and Wagner. Notably, leading Wagnerian roles include Elizabeth in Tannhäuser, Elsa in Lohengrin, and Isolde in Tristan und Isolde. She was recognised as the preeminent Brünnhilde of her time.
Lisa's impressive journey led her to perform with distinguished symphony orchestras and opera companies worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera New York, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and Berlin Staatsoper. Her exceptional achievements include winning The Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1991, making her the only Australian to achieve this honour. Additionally, Lisa holds the distinction of being the sole Australian since Nellie Melba to have sung Aida at The Met.
